For I am the bellydancer!

This is essence of all women that is expressed in Serena’s dancing in Greece. Listen and you will know all the things a women can do with her body:

“I am a woman wrapped in chiffon and jewels, thin silks and girdle of gold, I strech my arms to embrace and encompass the universe, I can arch my back in pride, contract my spine in humility, sway my head in grief, ripple my arms like a snake, toss my head in defiance, pose regaly like the sphinx, wring my symbols with authority, bow down in reverance, leap with unbridle joy, bend back in contorsion, control the quiver in my hips, tell a thousand stories with my eyes, skip with childwide glee, the smile of experience on my lips, glide in innocence, endure with age , spin like a dirvish, ondulate in sensuality, excite, promise, create, change, tease, mock, unveil my passion, entireling seduce the world as I move my body for I am the bellydancer. And now come dance with me…”

This is an hommage to Serena who was dancer and choreographer and made belly dancing popular in the United States. She died in 2007 at the age of 73 and yet she was still giving classes every week at the Serena Studio on 939 Eighth Avenue, at 55th Street. I took her classes a few times in 2006 and let me tell you that she had more grace and muscles tone in her little finger than I had in my entire body!

And if you want to see more creme de la creme of belly dancing.

Obscenity just 50 years ago!

I love Jeanne Moreau. She has always taken the road less traveled in her actrice choices and she has remarkably aged well with no (or perhaps minor – I don’t know) surgery allowing her faces to truly reflect wisdom, age and grace all at once. Also I adore her raspy voice.

I saw The Lovers a few months ago and it has kept me thnking. The story is ageless: she is a married women who lives in the countryside. She visits her best friend in Paris regularly and takes a polo player as a lover there. Now this lover’s purpose is really to get her out of her routine life and perhaps to allow her to be more coquette than with her rather workaholic and severe husband. Now the husband has some suspicion and invites the BFF and this gentleman for a week-end. Now the story starts : Jeanne Moreau meets a young and handsome man as her car breaks leaving her late for her guests on the side of the road. She invites the young man to join them…. the night that folllows is mesmerizing and I will let you discover it.

The movie was forbidden in the United States and the viewing of the movie was convicted for depiction of obcene material. The case went to Supreme court where a judge would allow it’s viewing after agreeing that he could recognize obscenity ”
I know it when I see it.  What is obscene is that rarely -and mostly never at the time- has a woman been filmed making love with such abandonment, the mix of pleasure, tenderness and passion. Her enjoyement in the arms of her lover can be felt.

THE LOVERS

Beyond this, the movie is still relevant today for it brigs to light the constant dilemna of married women and the action that would follow such a discovery of love. Would you, could you leave a married life after a night of passion to follow desire & sensuality…. is she doing the right thing following a man she barely knows, for pure physical sensation, the discovery of oneself through the organism… can the body lie ?

Jeanne Moreau is so feminine in this movie: as a young wife, as a mother, as a lover.

Rent it, you tube it,…

A dream, you will keep thinking about long after you have waken up…

To create world in any of the arts takes courage

Theses are beautiful pictures of Georgia O’Keeffe. I love her eagle eyes, her way at looking at the camera with this slightly condescending attitude. There is so much force in this woman that she seems to be empowered by a greater force that she channels in her paintings. I particularly love older pictures of her, the ones where she is so androgyne.

A true artist, she transcends love in her paintings with the dance of color, light and subject and her mysterious way of looking at the landscape and objects. There is so much sensuality and desire in her paintings that I would qualify her art as being “a fleur de peau” which is a French expression that describes when your skin becomes extremely sensitive to anything that it touches it.

Also look at this treasure, an interview of her at 92 and still so much playfulness and mischief.

Look out for the  movie on her life on Saturday September 19th on
Lifetime.

Determined to love by Nina Simone

The piano, the words, her voice…

Love me or leave me and let me be lonely

You wont believe me but I love you only

Id rather be lonley than happy with somebody else

You might find the night time the right time for kissing

Night time is my time for just reminiscing

Regretting instead of forgetting with somebody else

Therell be no one unless that someone is you

I intended to be independently blue

I want you love, dont wanna borrow

Have it today to give back tomorrow

Your love is my love

Theres no love for nobody else

Say, love me or leave me and let me be lonely

You wont believe me but I love you only

Id rather be lonley than happy with somebody else

You might find the night time the right time for kissing

Night time is my time for just reminiscing

Regretting instead of forgetting with somebody else

Therell be no one unless that someone is you

I intended to be independently blue

Say I want your love, dont wanna borrow

Have it today to give back tomorrow

Your love is my love

My love is your love

Theres no love for nobody else

I wish…

in-the-mood-for-love

I wish I had her allure and elegance.
I wish I walked like her.
I wish life sometimes had these slow magical moments.
I wish  a man looked at me like the way he does.
I wish a love with this intensity, yet where every gesture, look, mouvement was that subtle.
I wish I smoked holding my cigarette at the very tip of my fingers.

I wished they kissed…
