Skip therapy and take your (or someone else’s) kids to the movie!

I love when things have a dual purpose: it satisfies my type A personality who needs to be multitasking at all times.

where-the-wild-things-are

In yesterday’s NYT, I read David Brooks’ intriguing column. He wrote about the idea that philosophy essentially gives one character to an individual vs. psychology where individuals can have multiple personalities. He illustrates the theory with the new Spike Jonze’s movie: Where the wild things are.

I have adored reading it to my children but was dubious that a book so short could be made into a movie. After reading Brooks, I am happy to say that I now accept having multiple personalities -welcoming my type B side. But also that this article was one of the most interesting movie critic -that wasn’t supposed to be one- and will run to the movies with my kids !

Extract of David Brooks Column: “The philosopher’s view is shaped like a funnel. At the bottom, there is a narrow thing called character. And at the top, the wide ways it expresses itself. The psychologist’s view is shaped like an upside-down funnel. At the bottom, there is a wide variety of unconscious tendencies that get aroused by different situations. At the top, there is the narrow story we tell about ourselves to give coherence to life.

The difference is easy to recognize on the movie screen. Most movies embrace the character version. The hero is good and conquers evil. Spike Jonze’s new movie adaptation of “Where the Wild Things Are” illuminates the psychological version.” see the NYT for more.

The September Issue: The Good the Bad and the Ugly!

I just came out of seeing the September issue and this movie title sums up all that my experience of working for 3+ years in the fashion industry:

The Good is played by Grace Goddington who truly stands for what Fashion is about in its essence: a never ending seek for sheer beauty and talent. What makes us dream. The Sola Gratia as defined by the Catholic Doctrine which holds that salvation is made possible only by grace; the faith and works of men are secondary means that have their origins in and are sustained by grace. And the designers talents are variations of that grace.

The Bad is Anna Wintour who embodies those who think they are the Popes of Fashion and dictate what your dreams should look like or that this grace should be implemented by everyone at all times.

And the Ugly are the yes man (funny how all those men in this movie had such pathetic attitudes) that crawl the entire movie, too afraid to stand for their own beliefs or worse the Andre Leon Talley’s of the world who are a masquerade to fashion showing up on the court with a LV racket and a diamond watch.

Conclusion:

1 – Continue to stare at Grace Coddington‘s shoots in Vogue
2- Never let anyone dictate your sense of beauty as awkward as it may seem
3- Rebel and Unvogue yourself

What do women want? I guess we’ll find out on Oct 26th

adotbillboard02

On Oct 26th & 27th will be held the Women’s conference in California inititated by Maria Schriver.

The website is brilliant with an overwhelming amout of information (or tidbits rather). It’s about work, balance, food, family, money, those in their twenties and those in their sixties…in other words it is about ALL Women in general (and California girls in particular!).

This might be a plague of the politically correct or the all too conscious citizen to make sure no one and nothing is excluded… hence it’s a big bazaar of stuff related to Women (they even managed to make Bono and his action in Africa relevant ??!).

The pinnacle is a young women in her thirties in the section : What women want, who says: “I embrace feminism and womanity, and hope that my needs address the needs of everyone, male or female.” Please help me here…

But don’t get me wrong, I am a big advocate of Women’s conferences and all sorts of ways to make us feel empowered, it’s just that looking at the website it feels more like a marketing conference with a women’s focus. I mean the one thing I really want from this conference -apart from attending the day of transformation with 19 women giving me tips and advices on how to live my life – was the paper napkins with maria Schriver’s inspirational messages at 24$!

The mysterious and oh so delicious Anne Apparu!

Anne Apparu

Anne Apparu is a NY bohemian artist chef who creates dinners on the 18th of each month in a different and always amazing location where mood,  food and attitude blend into a happening.

The 18th Restaurant is the opposite of anything pretentious, formulaic and safe: it’s just cool, unpredictable and more like going to a dysfunctional family reunion but with artsy relatives.

I have met Anne on several occasions by now and each time I discover a new facet to her talented personality.

She is this soft-spoken and sensual young woman who appears slightly surprised by this cult following she has created. Then it’s her sharp awareness about the life force of foods and her determined need to nurture others – transmitted through 3 generations of women – that jumps out.

And more recently, I have seen her eye that stays open to the mysterious moments of life. She says that each month, the restaurant is a small miracle in itself where people, an atmosphere and her art collide to create something that is very far from a recipe and that can never be reproduced.

Last month, the 18th Restaurant was hosted at this incredible Orensanz Foundation, an old Synagogue on the Lower East side. On Sunday, the dinner I hear, will take place in a superb loft with major artwork on the walls :

You must RSVP to the18threstaurant@gmail.com to attend or email her to receive next month’s invitation.

Miss.Q.In

Miss Q’n is my favorite song – listen on Youtube... we want to be princesses and meet a prince and then we want to be queens and meet a king! I wanna be me!

When i was a little child i dreamed to be a princess
when i tried to be this princess i dreamed to meet a prince
when i was this princess i dreamed to be a queen
when i was this princess i dreamed to meet a prince
traveling from the north to the south

Traveling from the north to the south, southern stories
South to the east.
East to the west
we all looking for the best

Traveling from the south to the north, northern stories
North to the east
East to the west
were all looking for the best

When i met this prince i dreamed to be a queen
when i tried to be this queen i dreamed to meet a king
When i was with this prince i dreamed to be a queen
When i was this queen i did not know what to do with this prince

Traveling from the north to the south, southern stories
South to the east.
East to the west
we all looking for the best

Traveling from the south to the north, northern stories
North to the east
East to the west
were all looking for the best

When i was this queen like society tell us to be
I realized that i was indeed i was empty inside
When i was this queen (2:30 in song hard to understand)
I relized that i wanna be…
I wanna be, i wanna be, i wanna be me

Traveling from the north to the south, southern stories
South to the east.
East to the west
we all looking for the best

Traveling from the south to the north, northern stories
North to the east
East to the west
were all looking for the best

Don’t try to be somebody else
Don’t try just be…
