Three times makes it a trend

The one rule in Fashion is that if you see something 3 times, no discussion needed, no need for the Wintour Approval… it’s a trend!

So please tell me I am right on this one:

First when I picked up the Times Style Magazine and plunged into the the Linda Yablonsky’s article on whether this 2010 Withney Biennal is a women’s Biennal.

With 55 female artists out of the 75 represented that is a news worthy number and one the Guerilla Girls would be proud of. However, she points out that we/they seemed to have moved away from the old feminist issues epitomized in Barbara Kruger’s “Your body is a Battleground”. So from what I read and hope to see on Tuesday, the Withney Biennale has assembled a political, personal and emotionally engaged group of women artists.

Then I am off to my once-in-a-blue-moon-but-so-worth-it workout at Exhale. I learned about the One Million Women Project initiated by the Dr Susan Love Foundation. The idea is to get 1 million women to sign up for a revolutionary research program to get to the roots of the disease. So here I am joining the Army of Women. Hey nothing better than feeling strong inside and out.

Then I ended the day watching with sheer delight the Queen’s Company, NYC’s acclaimed all-female classical theater company, which was presenting a rare revival of Susanna Centlivre’s luscious classic comedy of intrigue: The Wonder.

At that point it wasn’t a coincidence anymore, it was the official birth of the Women’s Collective Trend. Well the birth I am not so sure because when I typed it in google, it appears 182,000 times!

Ironically, it is not a big number by Google standards! But wait until we reach a Million!

Apotheke says the prescription

apotheke

Still too much snow? I agree!

Have a drink, they say! OK but only if it’s the Deal Closer from Apotheke.

The place was formely an Opium Den and later a Chinese Opera House. Smack in the middle of Chinatown, with no signs on the door, it sits in this dark alley nicknamed Bloody Angle because of  the Chinese gang wars that happen then.

I took 2 friends: one from downtown NYC and one from France. You will never guess who felt like a tourist. The place was packed with Italians, French & Spaniards. Well there was one cute New Yorker with a very Basquiat hairdo in the crowd. Anyway, everyone was very Euro & sexy. Bartenders included.

I had them try the Deal Closer, my favorite cocktail. It’s made from Vodka-infused with local Chinatown aphrodisiacs, fresh mint, cucumber, lime and vanilla essence and… well just what the doctor Mixologist Albert Trummer recommends.

“We look at a bargoer almost as if he’s coming to a doctor’s office,” says Albert. “If you have a broken heart, champagne with an elixir of orange oils and rosemary helps solve the problem. For high blood pressure, I recommend bitters. And we have a special bourbon infused with lemon and thyme that helps with headaches and other pain.”

Living in NY, we all have something that needs to be cured… Hence the list of drinks is divided in Health & Beauty, Stress Relievers, Pain Killers, Aphrodisiacs, Stimulants, Pharmaceuticals, Euphoric Enhancers and Therapeutic Treatments. The last category is called House Remedies… only for those who dare!

Albert might have been talking about me when he said: “For people in a happy mood we have aphrodisiacs like absinthe from the south of France.”

Beats the snow, doesn’t it?

Snow vs Fluorescent

That’s it!  One too many snow days!
The SheisFrench emergency plan must begin. And the first step involves fluorescent colors!

No one is asking you to go all 80s. I know it is a strong fashion trend but unless you are a model, shot by Demarchalier in his St Barths House, its not happening. The SheisFrench way is much more subtle and oh so efficient! All Feng Shui experts confirm that wearing sexy underwear in bright colors bring romance and passion to relationships. Pink, red or purple are the best choice.

dmarquit2

Here are some of SheisFrench’s favorites:

Deborah Marquit has a whole line of the most adorable fluorescent colors that you can possibly dream of.

And Victoria Secret, well who can live without the Angels…

“In general, pink is considered to be one of the best colors for the bedroom because it is the color associated with relationships. Pink is also thought of as an auspicious color combining the fire/ passion of red and the metal element of white. Pink represents love and pure feelings of joy, happiness, and romance.

According to Channel NewsAsia’s Taiwan Correspondent Christina Lo, 2010 is the year of the Red underwear bringing luck & prosperity. If red is not your thing, she adds that “this year, we find consumers prefer colors like red, golden, yellow and orange.”

Good luck Rihanna, looks like you your on the right path!

All of this makes me feel:
* Nervous
* Incredibly turned on
* Silly!
* Excited, but still unsure
* Very close to you
* Like we’re going to have a lot of fun

The worst thing that could happen is:
* One of us will chicken out

* We’ll decide that we don’t like it
* It might be emotionally intense

Anyway the girl is a machine – no pun intended! Pablo Neruda knew more at 19 than most

love-poems
The Queen
I have named you queen.
There are taller than you, taller.
There are purer than you, purer.
There are lovelier than you, lovelier.
But you are the queen.

When you go through the streets
No one recognizes you.
No one sees your crystal crown, no one looks
At the carpet of red gold
That you tread as you pass,
The nonexistent carpet.

And when you appear
All the rivers sound
In my body, bells
Shake the sky,
And a hymn fills the world.

Only you and I,
Only you and I, my love,
Listen to me.

LA REINA
Yo te he nombrado reina.

Drunk as Drunk

Drunk as drunk on turpentine
From your open kisses,
Your wet body wedged
Between my wet body and the strake
Of our boat that is made out of flowers,
Feasted, we guide it – our fingers
Like tallows adorned with yellow metal -
Over the sky’s hot rim,
The day’s last breath in our sails.

Pinned by the sun between solstice
And equinox, drowsy and tangled together
We drifted for months and woke
With the bitter taste of land on our lips,
Eyelids all sticky, and we longed for lime
And the sound of a rope
Lowering a bucket down its well. Then,
We came by night to the Fortunate Isles, And lay like fish
Under the net of our kisses.

Ebrio de Trementina

Ebrio de trementina y largos besos,
estival, el velero de las rosas dirijo,
torcido hacia la muerte del delgado dia,
cimentado en el slido frenesi marino.

Palido y amarrado a mi agua devorante
cruzo en el agrio olor del clima descubierto,
aun vestido de gris y sonidos amargos,
y una cimera triste de abandonada espuma.

Voy, duro de pasiones, montado en mi ola unica,
lunar, solar, ardiente y frio, repentino,

Barbie is a Computer Geek

barbiecomputer

That’s it.  The last frontier has been crossed. Computer geeks are under siege and will now have a new leader: Barbie! She has chosen her new career as a Computer Engineer and my inner geek applauds.

When I saw the actual doll, I was disappointed by the whole pink thingy laptop and glasses. Why do we have to gimmick everything with pink ! And when was the last time you saw a women past her 20′s wearing pink? Maybe Barbie should focus on dropping the color pink for a year… that might help girls take her career wise more seriously!

This is her 125th career since 1959 and a big leap since her 1963 babysitter days. The project is backed up by non profit organization The White House Project and Take your Daughters to Work Foundation. No small change here. And she has chosen 10 Women to watch in 2010 among which is MacArthur Fellow Yoky Matsuoka who has top science degrees from Berkeley and MIT,  and is educating others in the emerging field of neurobotics at the University of Washington.

The full list of barbie’s career is fascinating. Even tough she seems out of touch with reality in some cases: Rockstar or Sea world trainer ; forget the Cheerleader career… is it even a career?  Perhaps  Barbie was more driven in the 90s when she wanted to be a paleontologist, an astronaut and a Pediatrician … We will try to forget her lifeguard / wannabe Baywatch attempt in 1994. She might be human after all ;)

barbieceo

All that being said, she did break a few milestones by going to space four years before man walked on the moon as an astronaut. In the 80′s she walked with her chin up in the Boardroom years befor melanie Griffith did so in Working Girl. And even better, she ran for President, in the 90s before any female candidate ever made it onto the presidential ballot. So drop the pink and the Barbie Surfer Mermaid, but keep up the good work.

Anyone knows what Ken’s doing these days?

French Love: Divine and Complicated

charlesmee

I saw Fete de la Nuit last week and like a song with a catchy melody, it is still playing in my head. I would have urged you to see it at the Ohio Theatre before it ends on Feb 27th much earlier but I admit still quite being able to describe what I saw. I now realize it is the very reason I enjoyed it so much.

Dense, rich, joyful, Fetes de la Nuit is a celebration of love with layers of dance, drama and music that unfold, transform and evolve like a big collage.

Despite the fact that the play is set in a French cafe with some nudity and smoking cigarettes, the theme is universal: “A search for love, the loss of love, the how of love, the why of love, the what of love, the discovery of love, while exploring the mystery of life. It says that it is our ability to love that makes us human and in that ability lives the hope for a better future.”

Charles Mee has written many pieces on Love in recent years. He is actually quite an expert at it. But Fetes de la Nuit reveals also his immense generosity towards this capricious matter. He gives it the space and depth to show its sensual, divine and complex forms. And in response, the talented cast gives it all.

Although the mystery of love is too vast and too complex to be answered, Charles Mee has gotten as close as one can get with Fetes de la Nuit! I am not the only one to think that: the show is almost sold out….
