I went all the way to Heaven and back… and let me tell you it was not only wonderful but I’m definitely planning to go back!
Those of you connected with She is French on Facebook know I am back from the South of France (you can count on me to volunteer for the toughest assignments and thanks Angele for offering to put it all on one bill
) where I just had to stop by the legendary Colombe D’Or.
I knew of the place as it is considered just short of a national treasure by some bbut had always wondered if it lived up to it’s reputation, it does and more.
So in one of France’s most charming village, behind heavy and intimidating wooden doors, hides the most romantic and unpretentious hotels in the world. I know that this might be a bit of an overstatement but please name another place that combines beauty, modern art masterpieces and lunch under a fig tree with a glass of wine where probably Picasso, Orson Wells, Matisse sat before you. Beaudelaire’s lines defined it best, the spot is pure Luxe, Calme & Volupte.
So I won’t bore you with such mundane details as the stone pool guarded by a giant Calder mobile and a Fernand Leger mosaic or the restaurant’s honest and savory traditional French cuisine. Nor will I mention my wanderings through the village to visit some fascinating art galleries – one in particular where I fell in love with a sensual Xth century statue representing Salabhanjika – and countless specialty stores packed with local products such as olive oil soap and Lovers sugar (it has a hint of ginger!) which followed the visit of the fascinating Maeght Foundation – (sadly all the Giacometti’s were traveling on loan).
Now I’ll just let you wonder why you have not heard of this place much sooner. But first please wipe the drool running down your chin because here comes the blow… this place is no secret to the OTHER sensual and sophisticated travelers in the know and it is booked solid from June to early September.
Since you are no quitter, light a candle, bribe the receptionist or start planning your 2011 vacation…
I’m doing all 3!

Thanks Agathe! I have a sun-soaked memory of an amazing lunch on the terrace there. Long live St. Paul de Vence!
