I was very excited to hear that the new collection of Fornasetti Plates was on display at Barneys - I have to admit that I haven’t seen it yet but I just couldn’t wait any longer just in case any of you was as obsessed as I am with this Italian artist.
For those of you who are wondering what this is all about, Piero Fornasetti was an Italian artist so prolixe, it is said that he produced over 11,000 original pieces in his lifetime. I guess being expelled fromthe Brera Art Academy for insubordination didn’t stop him!
My obsession with his plates Series equals the one he had with Lina Cavalieri’s face, which he found in a 19th century magazine. What fascinates me is most is his obsessiveness through the use of a single image over and over again – and his capacity to present it each time in an entire new way. The Mona-Lisa look alike face appears provocative at times and playful at others but I am not worried that you’ll find one you like among the 350 variations he designed.
L’Eclaireur, Paris’ most avant-garde and fashionable store even created a restaurant in homage to Fornasetti’s “strong imagination and elegant and mystical sense of humor”. Don’t miss it!
At Barneys from May 15th through June 27th:
