I do not know what to think about 16 year old Jessica Watson. She is part of this year’s trend of teenagers trying to break the world record of the youngest person to sail solo, nonstop and unassisted around the world. The record was held by British sailor Mike Perham, 17 since last year. Jessica says that she was inspired by Kay Cottee who at 34 became the first woman to sail solo, around the world in June 1988.
My first reaction is to think she is crazy but following your dream often is.
My next reaction is just pure admiration for this young woman so determined that she won’t let her age or lack of inexperience stop her. (You should see my laundry list of excuses!!)
Then I just think that the world of tomorrow is going to be quite a fun place for my boys with young women like her shaping it.
Maybe her trip is taking place slightly earlier than she might have planned – due to this teenage competition frenzy- but Jessica left 4 days ago for a trip that she estimates to 230 days. I will, like many thousands of people, follow her blog during this adventure.
Now thank god, the court in The Netherlands has decided that Laura Dekker, 13 was too young to try to sail around the world by herself.
So if there is any fear left in you to accomplish whatever dream, pick up Susan Jeffers’ book: Feel the Fear and Do it anyway and sail away
Thanks Nathalie
