In the Next Room or the Vibrator play is a play about vibrators – I never thought that as soon as men invented electricity they manage to invent vibrators ! Fascinating subject that discusses the convention of the Victorian age and the yearning for freedom, whether sexual or artistic.
I guess it tells you that men have always been fascinated by the female pleasure, ” the play examines the treatment of women’s “hysteria”—depression caused by sexual frustration—by means of the newly invented vibrator. Gynecologist Dr. Givings administers “electrical massage” to repressed housewives, while his own spouse is unfulfilled as both sexual partner and mother. She listens at the door of her husband’s operating theater—the “next room” of the title—as his patients moan in ecstasy.
So just in case you only heard about vibrators from Sex & the City, run to the Lincoln Center Theatre a way to have a deeper (sorry!) knowledge on the whys and hows of such an invention.
Sex is hardly ever just about sex. Shirley Maclain
I know nothing about sex, as I was always married. Zsa Zsa Gabor
